A North Las Vegas Police officer died this afternoon after being shot while responding to an incident, according to a news release.
The officer, who hasn't yet been identified, was taken to UMC Trauma, where he died after the shooting.
"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of North Las Vegas' finest," Chief of Police Jacqueline Gravatt stated in the release.
This afternoon, at about 2:15 p.m., officers were responding to a report of someone pointing a firearm at another person in the area of Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road.
As officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with the man who was armed with a handgun, but he ignored their commands and fled.
An officer located the armed man and told him to show his hands. The man ignored the officer's commands and approached him, and they exchanged gunfire.
Both were struck by bullets. The officer was hit multiple times, the release stated.
Both the officer and the shooter were taken to UMC Trauma, where both were pronounced dead.
The investigation is still in the preliminary stages, and more information will be released as it becomes available, the release stated.
"Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer's family, friends and his brotherhood in blue," Gravatt stated.
